Ndanda High School Said to Be in Bad Shape

Mtwara — The once Famous Ndanda Boys High School in Masasi District, Mtwara Region, is on the verge of losing its glory reportedly after authorities abandoned it for a long time.
Buildings at the school, where a number of top leaders in the country, had studied, have dilapidated beyond a repair. It is also faced with shortage of classrooms and teachers.

Presenting the school's report during the 45th Form Six graduation ceremony over the weekend, the Ndanda headmaster, Mr Joseph Sowan, said the school now has the capacity to accommodate 300 students only.
"The school was built by missionaries in 1928 with the capacity of accommodating 300 students. There are presently 992 students," said Mr Sowani
He added: "We have a dormitory which is not currently in use due to old age... infrastructure experts have warned us not to use the badly damaged buildings."
He said classrooms, dormitories, dining hall cannot accommodate all 992 students.
The school is also not fenced, making it easy for students and soe undesirable characters to sneak in and out of the institution' premises at will.
"We have only 14 teachers instead of the required 45. The school also lacks a computer lab," he revealed.

He explained that despite the challenges facing the school, it was doing very well academically.
Last year 312 out of 380 students who completed Form Six passed their examinations and acquired qualification to join university.
About 473 students are set to sit for their final examinations next month.
In his welcome remarks to the guest of honour, Masasi MP Mariam Kasembe, the school board chairperson Mrs Agnes Mnenje, said the academic success was high discipline observed by the students.
Addressing the gathering, the MP admitted that the school faces great challenges but hailed extra efforts made by the teachers or good performance.
He promised to donate 10 computers to the school.

Dear Parents of Joseph Chow

Much greetings to all of you and I wish you all the best and god bless all your family members  I would like to say thank you for your august letter because it was so glad for me to hear about your family and the way how the family engages in various activities.

My name is Nelson, I was born in 1992 in Masasi district within Mtwara region.  My parents have four children and I am the third born.  I have a brother and two sisters..

I do enjoy the life of Tanzania because within our country there are things like National parks and these help us to leisure and also there is Mount Kilimanjaro and tourists come there.  We students visit these attractions especially on holidays.  So I ave many interests to be a citizen of Tanzania.

Daily life especially when i stay at home is not so interesting because we are living in a a rural area where there is no electricity  and little water.  The roads are poor quality which does not facilitate transportaiton of goods and services from one place to another especially to town.  Also we eat maize and cassava ugali also in case of meat some can be had only one a month or once a week.  I like rice and meat.  I have a small room that I use to sleep and a lamp for lighting during the night.  But when I am at school the life is quite different from that of home because there is electricity, frequent supply of water and enough food.  We are in our dormitories and discuss issues pertaining to studies and learning social morals like respect for the elders and greeting each other.  Also we are emphasizing about sports and games for the health of our bodies.  Always during the day especially after class we to to the football grounds to play football because this is our favorite hobby.
Another issue is about my studies.  I study and will perform well in form six exams ready for university.

Dear Donna Robertson-Chow
Thank you for your letter of August 21, 2011.  We are alright as family with good health.  I continue will with my studies, and before also I have done well in the first term and am at the top of my class  This is due to my hard work and deep busy in studies as wells as your contribution in scholarship fund that help us to survive.  Thanks for that.
I spend my school holiday at Dar-es-Salaam to my uncle who is a bus driver In the city.  He spend his time to transport passengers from place to place.
As other countries in Africa, Tanzania is the country which her people live in peace.  We achieved Independence in December 9, 1961 under Nyerere.  In our school we are prepared different groups to perform our studies Traditional drums and singers write good songs which make Independence day beautiful.   Also Tanzania is a country with many natural attractions, such as Kilimanjaro, Ngorongoro National park.   Historical sites such as Zanzibar are also here.  What are the attractions are in the US?   I wish you good job and and daily life!

i was glad to get your August letter.  I am very happy to see you are all okay.  I do thank God to keep me to now.  I am very well and my family too.
I am happy to give you my terminal examinations results as they were good to me.. I had scored 70% (B) in Mathematics, 83% (A) in Geography, 70% (B) in Economics and 80 % in General Studies.  From that result give to power to overtake a class, so I had a first in my class EGM of 72 students.  I had challenges from my fellow students in Math and Econ.  But those who challenged me were failed in Geography and General studies.  And influence me to be the first.

In my school, electricity and water is not a problem.  There are four dormitories and each dormitory has electricity and water. Despite that there are sometimes without electricity and water, and we have o spend time fetching water for cooking.  Our school has another school about 20km away called Mahiwa, and we are cooperating together with them during the holidays.

I spend my time studying from 6am to 3 pm and then I rest until 4:30 pm  I go to the pitches.  I like mucht to play volleyball, or football.  On 20-11-11 I had an accident on the football pitch, my leg got a chock and I suffered for 3 days.  Now I am fit.

I would like to thank you for your aide to us more and more because it enables me to improve my studying.  Now I have many books of Economy, mathematics and Geography.  Thank you alot.  I am so gad to get your letters.  Will you visit us again?

Greetings from St. Luise!  How are you both?  I hope that this letter finds you both in good health and good spirits.  Us here at St. Luise we are doing well.  We are preparing for the national examinations for Form IV which start tomorrow morning.  The students have been working very hard and now I am sure that they will succeed.

I am writing to acknowledge the receipt of your donation of $1000 and to express my utmost gratitude for the help that you have given us here at St. Luise.  We have already spent much of the money to purchase books for the A-level students.  We have purchased books of chemistry and biology along with some new syllabi for O-level subjects.  I have attached a receipt for the purchase.  We have plans to purchase other books which will match the new O-level syllabus but it will take some time to find the right books.  We wills end a receipt when we make the purchase.

Dear Mr. and Mrs. Chow,

On behalf of our school board, district education official, teachers, other staff members, students and their parents, I would like to give you my deepest thanks for your contribution to Hagati Secondary School.

Your donation has gone to help many projects here at our school. We were able to install electrical wiring in one of our classrooms and we can support desktop computers that were donated to our school earlier this year.  We purchased wood to build furniture  for these computers and shelves for our library.  Also, we were able to pay for school and examination fees for three students, Terisa Kinwinda, Asteria Landubilla, and Crispin Ladubilla.   Terisa is motherless and her father suffers from mental illness.  Asteria and Crispin who are motherless and fatherless, also received support for their basic needs.
